Queen’s University is seeking a senior fundraising professional to provide strategic oversight and leadership to the development team of the Faculty of Arts and Science and the University Library, in alignment with the university’s advancement objectives and priorities.
Reporting to the Chief Development Officer (Queen’s Office of Advancement), with functional accountability to the Dean, Faculty of Arts and Science and the University Librarian, the Executive Director of Development, Faculty of Arts and Science will manage critical donor relationships within a sophisticated portfolio of major and principal gift level benefactors and estates, as well as a small number of corporations and foundations. This portfolio currently generates $4 million annually, with real potential for growth.
The Executive Director leads a team of five fundraising professionals who work in concert with academic, university, and advancement leadership to achieve major gift fundraising goals in support of the priority funding projects of the Faculty of Arts and Science, including the University Library. The incumbent will serve as a valued member of the University Advancement Development Leadership team, as well as the Faculty of Arts & Science Leadership team.
This is a unique opportunity for a highly experienced major gift fundraiser who is motivated by challenge and inspired to build on our success, through the strategic refinement of our Faculty major gift development program, and the further development of our Faculty fundraising team. In doing so, the incumbent will also have the pleasure of working with senior volunteer members of the Dean’s Council, who are committed to helping the Faculty of Arts and Science achieve new levels of accomplishment in support of top priorities in teaching and research.
The Executive Director will ideally be based in Kingston. We are also open to candidates committed to being present in Kingston on weekdays. Regular travel within and outside Canada is anticipated for this role as well as occasional work on evenings and weekends.

The Faculty of Arts and Science development team has two key functions: private-sector revenue generation and stakeholder relationship building efforts in support of the Faculty’s and the University Library’s funding priorities. To facilitate these efforts, our team of 5 professional staff engages in the cultivation and stewardship of lifetime interactions with alumni and friends, raising awareness among current and prospective stakeholders about the importance of investing in the Faculty and the University Library. The Faculty of Arts and Science exceeded its target in the $70 million Initiative Capital Campaign that ended April 30, 2016. Post-campaign, an annual combined target of $4.5 million has been set for the Faculty of Arts and Science and the University Library. To assist with our development plan, we have recently established a new Dean’s Council, comprising of Queen’s alumni, parents and friends.
Our development plan is focused on three main funding priorities: attracting the best and brightest students; sustaining excellence in teaching and research; and enriching the teaching and learning environment. Within these areas, some of our key fundraising priorities include:

The ideal candidate will be an outstanding major gift fundraiser who will teach, empower and activate others to support top priorities for the Faculty of Arts and Science and University Library at Queen’s University. Using a thoughtful and highly strategic approach to donor engagement, the Executive Director of Development will be committed to the entire lifelong relationship of our donors. In addition to having a proven track record of closing gifts at the 6-figure level and higher, knowledge in the areas of gift planning, family wealth management, and integrated gift strategies will be greatly advantageous.
The successful candidate will be driven to effectively and efficiently balance the competing demands of leading a team, developing and managing a results focused major gift program, and playing a key active role in principal and major gift fundraising. The Executive Director of Development will provide clear direction and expectations to staff, and will encourage accountability as well as bold and creative thinking. Through exceptional coaching and mentoring, enabling further growth, the new incumbent will galvanize individual efforts to allow our team to reach its full potential. In building and sustaining productive relationships with academic leaders, the Executive Director will have an approachable and collegial style, and will be respectful of the knowledge, experience, and commitment of academic colleagues. Curious and intellectually versatile, the ideal candidate will appreciate the academic breadth of the Faculty of Arts and Science, as well as the University Library, and will be keenly interested in learning about our numerous academic areas of focus.
Demonstrating maturity in presentation and style, the successful candidate will be extremely comfortable interacting with senior executives and people of wealth, and will demonstrate a high degree of diplomacy and personal integrity. Passionate and articulate, the new incumbent will possess both excellent speaking and writing abilities and exceptional listening skills.
Duties & Responsibilities
The Executive Director of Development, Faculty of Arts and Science will serve as a key advisor to the Vice-Principal (Advancement), Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science, University Librarian, Faculty and Development Leadership teams, volunteers, and the university more broadly, providing high-level expertise, strategic direction and facilitation in the development and implementation of fundraising strategies designed to maximize long-term financial support for Queen’s Faculty of Arts and Science, and the University Library.
The incumbent works closely with other senior Development and Advancement staff including heads of Prospect Research, Advancement Communications and Marketing, Gift Planning, and Advancement Services with the goal of furthering the University’s development goals.
Specifically, the Executive Director of Development’s responsibilities includes the following:
- Leads a comprehensive development program designed to obtain maximum long-term financial support for the Faculty of Arts and Science from a range of potential major and principal gift level benefactors, estates, corporations and foundations ($25k+).
- Personally manages a portfolio of 50-75 prospective and major gift benefactors. Develops strategies, identifies, evaluates, cultivates, solicits, and stewards net-worth prospects and major gift benefactors with a primary focus on securing integrated gifts (in-life and future gifts) with a combined present value above $500,000.
- Collaborates with Stewardship & Benefactor Relations to establish timely and appropriate stewardship plans, ensuring gifts are handled and recognized according to sound Advancement practices.
- Serves as a central resource and liaison to benefactors, the Office of Advancement, senior university officials, volunteers, allied professionals, executors, and others, to help secure major and planned gift commitments.
- Stays abreast of philanthropic developments, giving vehicles, and/or relevant legislation that may assist in maximizing revenue.
- Motivates, works closely with and supports a broad range of influential volunteers (including members of the Faculty of Arts and Science Dean’s Council), and university senior administrators, who will assist in securing philanthropic commitments and participate in the process of identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors.
- Researches, coordinates and prepares internal and external communications, briefing notes, research profiles, funding proposals, gift agreements, stewardship reports, activity reports, and accountability reports.
- Develops and maintains an in-depth knowledge of the university’s activities, priorities and needs in both teaching and research, particularly pertaining to the Faculty of Arts and Science, and University Libraries. Applies this knowledge in matching the interests and needs of prospective benefactors with the strategic needs of the university, the Faculty and the Library.
- Contributes to the strategy for comprehensive and project specific fundraising campaigns.
- Analyzes data and prepares reports required to formulate, execute, evaluate and benchmark strategic and priority driven implementation plans. Reports findings and implements changes in strategy as required.
- Prepares annual budget documents, and manages the operating budget for the Faculty of Arts and Science Development unit.
- Serves as part of the Development Leadership Team.
- Represents the university and the Office of Advancement on committees and to internal and external audiences, ensuring understanding and adoption of Advancement policies and procedures.
- Plans, prioritizes and manages the work of employees, providing strategic and tactical advice, guidance and coaching. Identifies the need for staff resources, participates on staffing committees, and makes effective recommendations regarding employee selection.
- Manages performance by establishing performance standards, reviewing and evaluating performance, and conducting formal performance reviews on an ongoing basis.
- Assesses staff training and development needs, and ensures that employees receive training required to improve and sustain successful performance.
- Investigates, addresses, and resolves employee/labour relations issues, including making decisions regarding disciplinary and discharge matters.
- Undertakes other duties as assigned in support of the unit and/or department.
Qualifications & Competencies
- Extensive experience and a successful track record in managing fundraising programs, with a focus on major and planned giving, preferably in a university setting. Consideration will be given to equivalent senior business development and sales experience in other sectors.
- Demonstrated knowledge of planned giving vehicles, as well as an understanding of family wealth management and integrated gift strategies.
- Outstanding strategic prospect management and tracking skills including identifying, evaluating, cultivating, stewarding and directing personal solicitation of planned/major gifts or equivalent.
- Demonstrated success developing and implementing strategic fundraising plans, and meeting objectives.
- Proven leadership and staff management experience in recruiting, directing, coaching, motivating and retaining staff.
- Demonstrated success managing, working with and supporting volunteers to achieve shared goals.
- Persuasive and creative communication and presentation skills.
- Comprehensive knowledge of federal and provincial Canadian legislation affecting charities and charitable status in order to secure complex planned and major gifts.
- Clear understanding of and strict adherence to ethical fundraising standards.
- Understanding of the administrative, academic and governance structures of the university environment and the challenges faced by post-secondary institutions.
- Experience working as part of a large and complex organization considered an asset.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills, with an ability to compile and interpret data from a variety of sources, select appropriate methods of analysis, monitor emerging trends and issues, and disseminate information.
- Strategic planning, budgeting and financial management skills to oversee and forecast the Faculty of Arts and Science Development unit’s budget portfolio, and assess budget implications of strategic initiatives.
- A valid driver’s license and passport are required.
- University degree is required. Degree from Queen’s considered an asset.
- Recognized or working towards the Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) or equivalent considered an asset.
- Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
